I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience with one of these? It seems like the best option for 1394 connected I/O and controll options under 2 grand (other than the RME fireface).
1. How do the Mic pre's sound... and what preamps are in it?
I'd rather just buy something like a Mackie controll surface and some good mic preamps if they dont sound good.
I dont like digidesign's pres at least the ones in the 002.
2. Do you know if there insert sends or if you can use dynamics processors before signal hits the software?
the 8 mic preamp's, I/O options, and compatability with software including Pro Tools, and relatively low cost makes this seem like a pretty good deal

also.... the reason ive been thinking about the project mix is because i wouldn't have enough of a budget to buy more preamps (8 preamps in the unit). I would need to buy for drum tracking and such if i went with the fireface due to only having four on the fireface rather than the eight on the projectmix. On the other hand if the pres in the projectmix suck then im kinda back to square 1.

I went through all of this myself, and I did end up going with the fireface. I'm really pleased with my decision, I think its an incredible device. It doesn't have a built in control surface but with a 2000 budget you could definately get a decent controller. Though I do agree that the project mix does have alot of functionality. I wouldn't buy it simply based on the fact that they raised the price 300 for no apparent reason. No new features guess they just wanted more money.
