There are already some mic reviews on Harmony Central.

Most of them are worthless but unfortunately that's what you get when you allow anyone to submit reviews (the usual MXL review goes: it's my first condenser mic and it's really great, so I give it a 10). On the other hand, if you filter reviews, then it's not an objective source anymore (suppose you receive tons of glowing reviews for a new 50$ mic, it's easy to discard them, but maybe the mic really is great!).

I'm gonna have to let anyone post so as to be "objective" like you said... but the site hasn't hit the search engines yet so hopefully I can get some recording pros (like from this forum) thoughts out there before it gets taken over by others with less 'experience'.

If you don't mind, I'll stick with your reviews Kurt, and the reviews of other trusted sources(I do like SOS - Sound On Sound and Mix reviews, though they certainly "accept" advertising and a certain, generally pretty easy, amount of "reading between the lines", must be done... no prob.). "Testimonials", on the other hand, I find, generally suck... mine included. As pointed out, above, a worthwhile review is tough enough to get from someone with exceptional, widely-varied experience, which most of us just don't have... I'm sure you're not too worried about a new site coming on-line... I know I'm not.

I don't mean any offense, but it's difficult to do a good review.

One has to take time away from actual studio work (or somehow manage to work it into the studio, but I for one don't like using review gear on an important client - what if it's utter crap???!!??) to actually test the gear and try to come up with a good summation based on both subjective and objective observations. This assumes that the reviewer has the appropriate test equipment. (Though, let's face it, not many of us, myself included, have huge test benches with which to put these devices through the ringer) and at least good supporting audio equipment worthy of actually testing a mic or other piece of gear.

I don't see how individual testimonies really serve that much of a purpose - very few are based on these silly little details like facts and many aren't from reliable sources. I've seen these kind of review sites all over the place - they review cameras, home audio,cars, etc. In general, you'll get some dudes on there giving everything 5 out of 5 stars and writing lengthy reviews cuz they think they're gonna get picked up by the "magazine reviewer scouts" but in truth, they are making up half of their review. Then there's the shit heads who poo all over everything and tell you how bad things suck in comparison to their "whatsit-whosit."

The fact is, people on this forum here, RO, provide meaningful insight into audio gear, including microphones and the wealth of experience and knowledge (and questions) is invaluable.

So, while I truly appreciate your intent to provide yet another service to the needy audio industry, I feel as though the service may be a detriment more than an attribute.

Please don't take this personally.

As for the "Official Reviews" here on RO, I think Kurt does a fine job, and I have also started a couple and I hope Kurt doesn't mind if I keep at it.

Oh, and by the way, for all the neigh-sayers out there - I'm not trying kiss Kurt's butt in that previous statement. He and I have disagreed on a few points in the past, but that's the great thing about these kinds of forums - we learn eachother's personalities and interact and even if we don't agree on the finer points of things, there's a mutual respect. I don't think you can find that on the "consumer review" sites.
