Silly question I know... But do you have speakers?
Also known as monitors. Headphones will work too.
Maybe this is your problem.

Also, do you have ears? If you don't disregard previous questions.

Also, do you have any idea how daft your question is?

Also...

Considering vegas 8 is software do you have mics?

Cables that run between mics and preamps?

I could go on and on suggesting things but I don't know what you are doing.

Tell me what gear you have, how it's connected what you're recording and what you want to achieve... Then I will be a smartarse again but with more direction and purpose.

I know this may seem unfriendly, I wasn't born like this... Just molded by society.

i'm using a mono mic made by akg.

i'm using windows xp sp3 fully reformatted

With the M-Audio Fast Track Pro can't you just turn the mix knob?

9. Input/Playback Mix Level Knob (Mix IN, PB) – This knob controls the audio mix sent to the Line Outputs, fading between the
input signals (input monitoring) and the output signal from your audio application software. When turned fully counter-clockwise
(IN position), only the input signals are heard at the line outputs. When turned fully clockwise (PB position), only the output signal
from your DAW software is heard at the line outputs.

well, i finally figured out how to monitor my recording (i can hear what i say through the mic). i had to keep the mix knob from middle - low (which is stupid because if i have the mix knob in the middle, the volume of the beat gets lowered if i want to be able to hear my self more through the headphones). anyone have an input on this? i would like to be able to turn the music in the headphone louder AND hear my self.

also, does anyone own a presonus eureka? I want to compare settings for voice record. much thanks in advance.

Instead of microphone monitor level and track monitor level, you have a microphone to track mix and a master volume. Some people prefer this setup. I have used both, and don't really prefer one over the other. It's just different.
