Hi there, we currently record our sessions direct to DAT ( L and R ) through one main mixer that carries signal from our individual mixers but the mix is never perfect with keyboard sound changes etc and we'd like to be able to fix things up after the fact ...
Current setup :
1 16 channel mixer Yamaha MV-1602
Utilize Aux 1-4 Effects send to amps allow us to mix out to our monitors and tailor the mix as needed to the 3 of us.
XLR outs to DAT L/R
This main mixer is accepting inputs from:
2 R/L for all Keys from VSTi DAW and Keys ( MV-1602 16 channel mixer )
1 Vox
1 Bass
2 R/L Guitar from Pod XT
8 channels for Drum Akai S2000 sampler and Acoustic Kit Mics
all are 1/4" ins
NOW, what we would like to do is get some old Skool ADAT XT or something and record 8 mono inputs ( 2 gtr, 2 drum, 2 keys, 1 bass and 1Voice ) so that we can remix later on after the jam.
We have been scratching our heads on how to maintain our current flexibility with monitors, yet can the direct record to DAT as is.
Has anyone had any experience with something similar ?
I thought perhaps setting up the 8 inputs into the ADAT unit or similar from our gear like above, then use the 8 outputs from multitracker into another mixer and use aux outs to amps for our monitors ...
Does this make any sense ? :?
I appreciate any advice on how to solve something like this. Would like to keep the outlay of cash minimal, we're not interested in making a living at this :) just an allowable remix of a live performance . .

Yeah, we're planning to dump the 1602's ( we have 3 of them ) for something a little less space hungry, I'll look into something direct outs or inserts. I really like the Behringer 16 channel just for my keys and 1U space, but I don't think it has those features either ...
Is the logic of the proposal corect though? Does something like the ADAT outs allow you to take whatever is coming into the machine get sent out as well ? this is where the head scrathing began not knowing how some of this gear works ...
Logic was to :
8 Inputs of signal ( from whatever source ) into an ADAT XT or soemthing similar.
Ability to record all 8 tracks.
8 outputs from ADAT XT to a mixer of some sort ( would a multitracker 8 outs for the channels be active even if we weren't recording at the moment ? )
Use mixer for the 8 ADAT XT outputs to send to power amps and monitors, whether we use our mixers aux outs or inserts, etc ....
Is the logic at least sound ? :) .... thx ...

It would be that easy if I wanted to spend the dosh for something I use once a year .....
Oh, and that damn money tree I planted would take root :) ...

You are a bit stuck with the Yamaha MV-1602. It doesn't have direct outs or even inserts than can be used as outputs, so there is nowhere to pick off 8 channels to feed the ADAT.
Your best course might be to pick up a different 16-channel mixer second-hand that has channel outs or channel inserts. They're available pretty cheaply these days on Ebay with everyone going over to digital. You could also use it to mix down from the ADAT.
