Whoa feller, no one is making you record midi....
Download N-track or buy some kinda Cakewalk recording program or something.

Or if all you want to do is record, git a cheap little digital or cassette recorder and hit "record." Anything else will require some effort and research on your part.

thanks reggie, if i get the cakewalk sonar program can i record straight from my mic input on my sound card and run my mixer directly through the mic input.

This doesn't make much sense. Running your mixer directly through the mic input would require a considerable force...

I think this is what you're trying to do...

Plug your microphone into a preamp on your mixer and passing that signal onto the mic input of your soundcard. Right? Since this is all hardware it has nothing to do with what software you use. So...

- Tell us what gear you have. A "microphone", a "mixer" and a "soundcard" doesn't mean anything, really. What brands? Models? How are they connected?
- No, sending the signal from the mixer into the mic input of the soundcard is not a good idea! Try sending it to the line input instead.

You will probably find that the soundcard that came with your computer is not very good quality for recording. They are mostly made to handle playing back windows sounds and for kids to goof around with recording on windows Sound Recorder and playing their voices backwards.
It can work though; one time I used my Sound Blaster Audigy2 to record some song ideas straight from the line out on my guitar pedalboard. Until you get a decent soundcard, I wouldn't bother with a $500 piece of software. Look at Cakewalk Guitar Tracks; I think it is supposed to be simplified. And you don't have to just record guitars with it; it can be "beats" or whatever the kids are calling it.
