I used the original NT1a and while I thought it was ok, since then I have not been motivated to try any other Rode mics.

Interesting... I have heard good things about the k2, but I have not used either the k2 or 414. In fact, I really can't say that I've used any real high end mic's.

I have gotten as much as I can out of my current collection (57, 58, Beyer, Superlux), and I'm pulling my hair out trying to decide on a good vocal mic.

Since I'm dropping for an LA-2A, I don't think that I can afford a U87, but something in the price range of the 414.

I read your "mic closet" thread, maybe an ATxxxx?

I don't know-this is driving me crazy. I could borrow some 414's, but they're older models and this wouldn't give me a good evaluation since I would be buying new.

If your like me I'd likely pick C414 (any) over the K2. Even more so using a C414 with an LA2A.

414 Price range is the AT4050 a lot like the C414, or the tube AT4060 which is real decent non hyped, big sounding mic. I got them all. Each has it's own character made from both greatness and weakness that makes them all unique.

The AT4060 works well with cheap gear as the thiness in sound of the cheap gear ends up being an eq to the AT4060 that mellows the harshness of the cheap gear. Doesn't always go well with the the LA2A thou.

Dragonfly or better yet the Kiwi should be in that range and can do many chores better than average.

I've have had great results several times with TLM103 and the LA2A.

EDIT: I just checked the kiwi - about 2K, and I think the max I can drop is 1K. The dragonfly and the TLM103 are in range though.

C414 B-XLII is the one that is optimized for vocals because of a slight presence peak somewhere between 5-10 kHz.

Either will serve well. The non II is`more mutipurpose in general, but I still prefer the II version and use when it works and use something else when don't.

Hey man, why not look into the LA 610 or what ever it's called, Mic pre and LA2A style comp. I think with the setup you're talking about your pre would be the weakest link by far and perhaps one of the most important. Also, my experiance with 414's is that they're kinda dull or at least lack some top end brillance (the one I was using was pretty old). I prefered the TLM 103 every time I did a shoot out on vocals. Drums OH's might be a different story . Sold my 414 and got a Royer. I'd check out some mic pre/comp combo's if I were you and package them with a nice mic. Make shure all play nice together.

That 414 must have been damaged. IMO the 414 in any variant is a pretty bright mic, as is any of the C12 capsule based mics were. Much brighter than any Neumann LD.

Really, hmmmm, perhaps I'll have to try one again. I was really excited to get it but it just didn't have that nice hi end sheen that the TLM 103 had. Every one present at the sessions I tried to use it on said the same thing. It was perhaps 8 years old? I got it from a "friend" of mine who had it since new. He had like 5 of them and was selling all but 2. ( he went from Pro to hobbyist and didn't need them all.) I've been told the TLM 103 is a real bright mic, but you think the 414 is actually brighter? Wow, that might be too bright. Damn, I've got to try out a 414 again. If they sound better than I thought then they might be some great mics to have around. Drum OH's, toms, Ac gtr, Room mics etc.......

Wow! I hadn't looked at the 610. Thanks for the idea, I'll have to research how these have worked out for folks. It's also about 1K less than the LA2A which, if it works out, I'll be able to pop for another mic.

Well, the UA 610 is a Tube mic amp with basic eq, no compression. But there is a new UA product, the LA-610 which is the 610 tube pre/eq with a LA2A style comp in it.

There is also the 6176 which is the same pre/eq but with an 1176LN style comp. Pretty cool...

But don't limit yourself to just UA, check Pendulum, Amek, API, Neve, OSA etc etc etc..........

I think you'd be better off than using the pre's you have now with an LA2A alone.

There are several online sources for the UA products including a national chain (Guitar Center) that carries them.
