Is this behavior the same on both Firestudios? Have you swapped the cables to see if you get the same behavior on the opposite speaker or does it move with the cable? Have you replaced the cable? Some powered monitors have a "volume"/attenuation knob to tweak positional balance of the speakers en loco. If it is accidentally turned it can cause this behavior as well.

While appreciating that this is unlikely to be a monitor loudspeaker or cabling issue since you get the same effect on headphones, you don't state how you have the two FireStudios connected up. Do you have them daisy-chained at the FireWire level?

If you get exactly the same effect by sending your mix to the headphone output on the second FS as you do on the first FS, then your problem is either in the mix or in any common routing configuration you may have set up inside the individual FireStudios. I would use Universal Control to check that the FS inputs and outputs on both units are routed directly from I/O sockets to FireWire and that you have not got any cue mixes set up.

after some finagling with your ideas and some more of my own i figured it out.

it was a headphone plugged into the balanced left thru on my headphone amp. i dont know how it messed with the whole left channel in the firestudio, but it sure was weird.

im glad nothing was actually damaged.

Ya know that's a special trick... Plugging the plug in all of the way. Works almost every time. That's why we all love XLR's.
