I am right on the edge of buying a VMP-4000E. I was hoping to find a set of pres with a nice mix between transparency and controlled coloration. Based on what I have read here, it appears as if Sebatron would meet my criteria quite nicely.
Because these are valve based pres I was also wondering about their suitability on quieter instruments where higher gain settings are sometime necessary. It seems as if everyone in this forum has nothing but praise for these mic preamps, I was wondering if anyone had ANY feedback about when these pre's might NOT be ideal - thanks.

The only problem you may find is that to get the higher gain, you have to run with the pad off, with the pad off the seb's sound their most colored, but to get a cleaner sound you can pad by 15db then cleaner again by 30db.
Thats not to say you wont like the seb's sound with the pad's out, you may (I do very much), but it isnt exactly what is thought to be "clean and transparent" by many, as in a GML/John hardy.
but it all depends on just how quiet we are talking here, and what kind of mic's, a light finger picked accoustic with a R84 will need about 60 to 80 db of gain, with a U87 half that, whereas a snare with a beta57 or 56 can almost be unity. (no gain)
