I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that GarageBand might not be the most popular recording software here - but I use it cuz its free with Macs, and it gets the job done and more. Its actually decently powerful if you have the right plugins and know what your doing.
Sometimes.
But I just downlaoded the AU version of the Fish Fillets freeware package from DigitalFishPhones. These are supposed to be pretty good for freeware - a compressor, a de-esser, and a gater/expander.
But I follwed the instructions (both in the manual, and the same instructions everything tells you how to install an AU plugin ) - I put the component file in Library>Audo>Plugins >Components. Garageband supports AU plugins - I have a few in there already. But Goddammit, the fish fillets don't show up in garageband.
anybody know what could be wrong? I don't think its the plugin , since its supposed to be pretty quality, and the website cerrtainly gives a very "clean" impression, like the guys have dont all the work for you and all you have to is drag, drop, click, and go (i love that feeling, thats why I'm a Mac user...f**k doing it yourself with software, no thanks :) )
so like I said, what could be wrongg?

Namby pamby mac users. Learn to use a terminal
Fish fillets, haha. What a stupid name for a plugin.
Is there any sort of Refresh Effects button in GB, or something that might need to be done to reload the effects list?

Sounds like you have a MacIntel, the fish fillets are only compatible to Power PC cpu's.
Urs Heckman the developer of the excellent Zebra softsynth, did the mac AU port.
The original developers of fish fillets were hired by another Magix so all development ceased.
But Urs has stated that he has some fish fillet-like ideas on his agenda.
here's the real scoop

In the mean time check out the suite of free Macintel compatible plugs from Chris Johnson, I ended up buying most of his for pay plugs.

For Mac it has. For PC it seems Sacha's still maintaining the site. Though it seems more of a blog than anything else lately.
Incidentally, if there were only one free plugin source available, I would hope that it be digitalfishphones. I love the fish fillets plugins and Dominion is a standard for me. It can really help a poor track or mix IMHO.

YES!! Dominion is a one of a kind badass plug! Can't go wrong strapping it across a 2 channel drum group post compression. :) I like having an unlimited amount of free compatible software at my disposal, that's why I'm a PC user... but Mac's can run XP now can't they? :)

You could run XP, or keep an older Power PC cpu around. But it's not like I can't live without fillets.
With new improved compressor in Logic I don't really miss them, it's been a couple of years since I moved to Macintel. The free Airwindows plugs actually cover more ground.
If you have a convolution reverb, you might want to check out his free impulses, from the Chris Johnson link from above.
I now use his Iron Oxide plug instead of PSP's vintage warmer.
