Hi,

When attempting to track into Reaper with an SM57 through an Echo AudioFire4 interface, anything I play is completely distorted and fuzzy.

The levels during recording look fine.

This seems to happen only when the device is set to ASIO. When it's set to WaveOut, I don't have the problem.

I have all the latest drivers installed.

Any ideas?

SM57 via XLR cable into Audiofire? Then firewire into the computer?

Distorted and fuzzy indicated overload or interference. If it is overload then look at the software setting withing the Audiofire GUI and within the specific Reaper channel. The Reaper slider should not be all the way to the top. Leave it at the default which should be 0.

It doesn't matter what the input stage looks like if your output stage is overloaded.

If this is interference then there are lots of possibilities. Disable any and all networking adapters in your operating system. You can turn them back on when you are done recording. Disable the screensave. Turn off the sleep or hibernate features.

Being too specific without being able to see your set up is difficult.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss methods for the measurement and characterization of the static distortion of the position data. When the distortion is constant, various methods can be used to calibrate the data from the tracker to increase accuracy. Several preliminary methods are discussed in this paper, including polynomial and weighted lookup methods
