OK everybody, here's your chance to brag or complain about your DAW. We get a lot of questions on this forum pertaining to DAW hardware as to what works and what doesn't so I thought this might be a good starting point for anyone building a DAW.

Please list as much info as you have on your PC or MAC, Soundcard, Software (Cubase, PT, etc.), type of recording (Audio, MIDI etc) and track limits with plugs.

This should give those looking to buy or build a DAW a reference as to what type of performance to expect from a similar machine. So if you love your DAW or hate it and can't wait to upgrade tell us about it.

Here's mine

Main DAW (Audio and Video editing)

AMD 3200+ Socket 939
Gigabyte K8NS Ultra - 939
1 GB Corsair Twin X PC3200 RAM CAS 2
ATI 9600 XT
Maxtor 80 GB PATA HDD (OS and Apps)
Maxtor 120 GB SATA HDD (Audio)
Maxtor 250 GB SATA HDD (Video)
Maxtor 400 GB SATA HDD (Audio and Video Backup)
PLEXTOR 708A DVD/RW
Antec True Power 430 watt PS
Full Tower ATX w/ 5 fans
NEC 19 inch Multisync
Layla 24/96 Audio Card
Adaptec AVC 2010 Video Capture Card
Cubase

Layla 24/96
Alesis AI3

Mobile DAW (Location recording only)

Intel P4 2.4GHz
Asus P4P800S Mobo
1 GB Corsair PC3200 RAM
N'vidia MX440 dual head Video Card
Maxtor 40 GB PATA HDD (OS and Apps)
WD 80 GB SATA HDD (Audio - Removable for copy to main DAW)
PLEXTOR Premium CD/RW
4U ATX Rackmount case

Adding LCD and 1394 to mobile DAW to use with Mackie 1620 for location recording.

I record all audio (rock and blues) and once in a great while a key or horn sample. I will be benching both units soon and will post the results.

OK, Who's Next :D

Here's mine

ASUS P4C800-E
P4 3.2 (HT OFF)
1.5GB PC3200 DUAL DDR
80GB 7200 RPM IDE HD (OS)
120GB 7200 RPM SATA (AUDIO)
ATI RADEON 8500
8X DVD-RW
DIGI 002R
NUENDO 2.2 + REASON 2 + FL 5 + GIGASTUDIO 3 + TONS OF VST-I'S

Main work is Hip Hop and R&B.

This computer has only audio software apps. Not even connected to internet. wont even install I-Tunes for all of those artists who want it to put the music on their ipod. I tell em ill put it on the HD of the pod and they can bring it home and make the switch.

I've found that a PC with only and i repeat ONLY audio apps on it performs sooooooooooooooo much more reliable and faster.

My old DAW setup was riddled with crashes bugs and non responding programs. NO PROBLEMS with this set up ever. and its very easy to debug because i always know what is causing the problems.

Thanks

M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 (I don't track on this machine - only mix)
Enermax 460 Watt Power Supply
Custom modded case and quiet cooling w/7 fans on speed controllers (full size ATX enclosure) (SLK-910U Heat Sink for the Processor)

My "portable" PC for tracking:

Shuttle XPC SB83G5 w/ 915 Chipset + ICH6R + Socket 775 Procesor
P3.0E Prescott 3.0GHz 800FSB 775 Processor 1MB L2 Cache + HT
1 Gig Geil Ultra Dual Channel RAM CAS 2-3-3-6 @ 400MHz
Windows XP Home OEM DAW Optimized
On-board Graphics ( :( ) (It has PCI Express 16x support - I'll buy a card soon, Grasshopper)
17" Dell Flat Screen CRT
60Gig Maxtor ATA100 OS drive
External FireWire 5.25" HD enclosure w/ Maxtor 160Gig ATA133 HD (Oxford 911) for Audio Data + Heavy Duty 5Amp 12V Power Supply for FW HD (HD Comes home for mixdown)
Lite-On Combo 8X Dual Layer DVD-RW + 40X CD-RW drive
RME Hammerfall LITE 96/36 (upgrading to HDSP 96/52 at some point)
RME AID-8 Pro AD/DA converter
Nuendo 2.0
Waves + PSP Plugs
Wavelab 4.0
Mounted in 1/2 width 5U Rack Shelf with the UPS unit beside it (PC and UPS in 5 Rack Spaces!)
VERY quiet, and TINY (not as tiny as the new Mac Mini)

I also use my Roland VS-2480 as a realtime Headphone Monitoring Facility (allows realtime latency free effects and mixing on up to 4 stereo/8Mono HP mixes) AND as a flying fader control surface for Nuendo. I can also use it's mic pre's and A/D converters if the AID-8's 8 Inputs are not enough.

I take my FireWire HD back and forth, and I can open the Nuendo Project exactly as it was on either PC system. Pretty cool IMO. The VS-2480 makes a killer addition with the HP monitoring+EQ+Effects AND Flying Faders for Nuendo (I have an ADAT to Roland RBUS converter to allow the 2480 to hook upto the RME Soundcard's ADAT I/O - 8 channels I/O) . You can dog Roland all you want - but I'm digging it.

That's it.

Hey There, I just signed up so i figured this was a good thread to start with. Here's my list of junk:

Acer Aspire 2010 laptop
1.5g Centrino Processor (trust me, this new chip is FAST)
External maxtor 160g hard drive
Digi 002 with Pro Tools LE 6.4
Tannoy Reveal powered monitors
Focusrite Trackmaster 2 channel preamp with EQ and Comp.
Studio Projects C1
Cheap behringer mixer that i use for a headphone amp
AKG K171 headphones
blah
blah
blah

I've been using Pro Tools for about 6-7 years. I WILL NOT use anything else. The interface and hardware is amazing and so powerful. I've spent the last couple of months doing some work for a band called Lions, Tigers, and Bears. Check out http://www.myspace.com/lionsandtigersandbears for some samples of tracks I've recorded (and partially mixed) with them. Let me know what you think!

My setup:

Dual Opteron 242's (1.6 Ghz)
4U Chembro rackmount case
3 HDDs (1 OS/app drive, 2 removeable drives for audio)
DVD burner
1.5 GB RAM
RME DIGI 9652 interface
MOTU 2408 MK III interface
el cheapo Midiman 1x1 midi interface

Software:
Sonar 4 PE, Sound Forge 6, Reason, Cool Edit, Waves Platinum and other misc. plugs.

I have yet to really max this machine out. I can run many instances of SIR (impulse verb) in real time without a crash. I recently got the MOTU for it's superiour routing abilities over the RME, and have not gotten it stable though. It locks the system up within a few minutes of use, so I'm still using the RME. Other than that, it's been a very solid system. Hard to bog it down.

Thank You from a "Newbie".

Hello everyone from a newcomer.
I was looking for some good info on what sort of laptop configuration to purchase for mobile studio applications; And you folks sure have helped on that end..in fact it's a bit much data. But helpful none-the-less.

I am looking for a lap top which will run both my CakeWalk Home Ed. and my V-Amp software.
Very green to home recording, so I may sometimes ask what seem to be "stupid" questions; I do hope none of you will get tired of me.

Farewell.

MusicMan2U answer

MusicMan2U answer:

Your question can start a "battle" of opinions about Intel and AMD. I considering myself a AMD lover because its price/value relationship, and i particulary find AMD processors to have something in it internal structure that make them very reliable on audio/video tasks. Intel in the other hand have come with many changes in their processors, putting more cache, more internal speed, and they performs flawlessly but at a higher price tag. Tip? Try buy an Intel Laptop. Why? one of the well known isues with AMD is that their processors generates more heat and consumes more power than Intel processors. Important feature for a mobile device, power consumption. Centrino Laptops are trying to prove that little less GHz and huge cache makes a power efficiency a dream.......So as a general rule for audio workstations, the more, the better.......512 MB ram at least, 60 GB hard disk, and lots of GHz if u plan to use a lot of time-based plugins like reverbs and delays (power-hungry plugins)... I still own a 1 GHz Pentium 3 PC that works fine with cubase, but i´m limited knowing what you can do with more horsepower..........

Intel Centrino laptop is a good choice when it comes to battery life, performance and temperature.

If you're looking for sheer power, there are also P4 2.8 and higher as well as AMD64 notebooks. Note however that not all applications benefit from Intel's Hyperthreading. Some even suffer penalties. I heard ProTools wants you to disable HT, where Cubase just loves it.

I might also add that cache is the CPU's on die memory which is something completely different than your system memory. 512MB is a nice chunk of RAM, though. Insufficient RAM might hinder your system to reach its full potential. With Intel the more cache the better, with AMD64 the difference between an 1MB or 512KB cache is almost negligable because of the on die memory controller.

On desktops the s775 Intel CPU's get a lot hotter than the AMD64 939, especially when it's a the latest 3500+ 90nm winchester core. Running hotter is not necessarily a problem. If you're recording in the same room as where your laptop/desktop is, it better be a quiet one. That's a little harder if the box runs hot. 8)

Cfaalm:

when you see a processor with 512 MB on it´s cache, just let me know.......

and ask here in this forum if temperature isn´t an important issue.....he´s asking for a LAPTOP, because he probably wants to use it outdoors, so temperature its a important factor.

I just wanted to help posting MY opinion. Why don´t you just do the same instead of trying to teach me some lessons?

I´m sorry if i was rude, or wasn´t your intention, but i get so %$&@! everytime someone wastes his time tryin to show what a "brainy" he is, instead of giving some advice to someone who´s asking for it.

A "hi" to everyone here...

My current setup:

AMD XP3000 cpu
Abit NF-7 mobo
80/200 GB ide drives
2 GB of PQI DDR400 ram
ATI Radeoon 9700 pro vid card.
Dell 2001FP 21" LCD monitor

Schecter 6 string guitar
Boss GS-10 Guitar/Bass processor
M-Audio 66-key Radium midi controller
Samson power amp + Resolv 65 monitors.
Furman PL+ Series 2 power strip holding most of it together.

I'd love to upgrade quite a bit of this.... namely a PodXT Pro for bass, Mackie HR824 monitors, a MOTU 828mk II, a Mesa Boogie recording pre-amp (or a guitar pod xtpro), and more synth software, possibly an 88-key midi controller....

None of this will make my songs better (well, just sound a bit better) :)

'Got the wrong "CPU cooling solution" for my first

I 'Got the wrong "CPU cooling solution" for my first PC/DAW build.. other than that I am well pleased....I am guilty of purchasing the coolest looking solution I saw in my too-brief search for cooling solutions...and I was fairly foolish I admit ... almost like the time we bought the MGBGT (not really) I will not buy that stupid again till next time ha ... "a Fool and his Money?"..I guess thats me for sure now I am hesitant to purchase a third plastic waterpump from this same source... they don't seem to have "quality" out too far in their motives as I could detect.. but in my new searches I still see the name all over and if not for feeling slighted I might even buy evercool again but I am here to tell all their talk about concern for qc is utter bullcrap and I do mean shit.

Well you said it was ok to complain right?
I told the company in email I would send a link to every new forum I joined and trashed the name Evercool
and as a point of added interest I saw a new instance of the exact same hardware with different name or packaging'wrapper", But its easy to spot mine is the wc-201 evercool watercooler
"Kingwin " is another "name" of merchant seeling cheap-ass cooling solutions that happen to look very cool and work a while b4 the cheapass pump gives out and replacement averages from my experience....@every 900 hours of operation the owner of this rig can expect to need a new waterpump.
in case my flame is very outof place i am done with that part
the rest of my pc/daw I assembled consists of:
asus p4p800d 1Gig crucial ram 3.0mhzPrescott 80gb -7200 audio
2 raptors-audio
fujijujitsu scsi (ultrasuperduperwhatyou call her )36gb system drive
aardvark directpro sound card solution also tascam us224 (backup)
I hope to unite these two soundcards as well as my two pc's when both are up andperational again,or ,eventually,( if it can be done) with reasonable success or purpose.
Used to try raid but wasted out with that.. no big cry..
Garritan VST symphonies instruments(GPO)
AbletonLive
Disk-keeper9
wintasks5
spywareblaster
demo za
demo goldwave
kazaa-crack FL works vst wut ever thats worth will love it sumday
ad-aware hijackthis pestpatrol spybot s&d

I know i forgot somethings
HP original daw and now my backup (consequently much more RELIABLE..thanks evercool)
hope to use my (Oh yeah) matrox 450 for multi monitor someday when I can buy some monitors
also hope to connect 2 pcs using fx teleport or something if any better means is found by then to share vsts and files and stuff

any comments for to help me resolve any of my obvious boggles are appreciated .. the others are for on down the road....or i am just gonna try and take it slow and easy since i got a bag or two of issues to ask for help with,ifIcan ever get that good at making myself understood ,it seems although I never try to overcomplicate, I effectively do ,from my obsession to be understood!(All my sentences have an end!)(my prose is not as I have been told by wise men..."unintelligible"...I wonder if big words ever did their part to end confusion or only make matters worse forever and always? oh well I am not here to rant at all.

I have a ("speech impediment").. in effect...explained with link or I like the explanation here, myself (naturally)
thanks friends

Hmm...

Homemade DAW: The Multi-Core Magnetizer
(also known as the One-Armed Electric Jesus at one time)
ASRock K7VM2 MOBO
Firewire and USB 2.0
AMD Athlon XP 2200
1 Gb DDR (2 512Mb sticks)
80 Gb Software/OS HD
160 Gb Music/Raw Material partitioned drive (in 5 1/4" cooling bay)
SB Audigy Platinum "interface" w/ additional inputs via S/PDIF
Dual 17" CRT's (one on top the other for Reason reasons)
Cheap CD-R/W
Cheap case modded for quiet

I built this PC in the fall of 2003 to keep up with the impossible complexity of my AcidPro songs (IDM). This transition forced me to give up Acid and finally buckle down on some Cubase and Reason action. These in combination with MANY other (secret...shh) music-related programs give me the computer-based tools that, when combined with outboard gear...make my music, well, my music.
Blah, blah....it works.
