I currently have an Mbox 2 Mini and M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 monitors(awful, I use headphones instead of them) and I run Pro Tools LE 8. I just graduated with a degree in audio recording so it's time I upgrade my set up.
I've been pleased with the PreSonus Digimax FS interfaces that were in the studios at my school. I'm looking at their FireStudio interfaces for my set up. Specifically the FireStudio and FireStudio Project models. I'm wondering how the mic preamps in them stack up against some of the other interfaces in the $500-$600 range. Unfortunately the PreSonus units were the only kind the school had, so I've never really had a chance to compare them to anything except my little Mbox. Any suggestions?
Now for monitors. My price range is around $500-$600. I'd like 8" monitors because I don't have a subwoofer and don't plan on buying one till down the road. The Mackie MR8's are the only monitors I've used in this price range. I plan on trying out some different models, but the closest store with any kind of selection is Guitar Center 2 hours away so I want to get some opinions and do some research before I go.

I've owned and used the 26/26 for about two years now, and for the most part, I love it.
Most 8ch interfaces in that range have quality, transparent preamps.
Nothing special, but nothing to shake your finger at either. Another good option in that range is the Motu stuff.
On to the FS -
The routing and quantity of I/O is wonderful. Amazing.
There are some issues w/ Firewire compatibility. Check w/ Presonus on compatible chipsets.
I've had a few other issues (clocking, sync'ing, etc) that were easily resolved w/ a phone call.
My only other qualm is the fact that the phantom power is set for Channels 1-4 & 5-8, rather than individually.
Also, having features like a pad and phase-reverse on each channel is nice.
To get better preamps in an 8ch interface, you'd probably have to step up to an RME Fireface, which raises the price range quite a bit.
I'm looking for something a little more stable and w/ better preamps, so that's where I am going next.
