Hi,
I'm considering getting a pair of good nearfields. (BM6a, AIR 6, Mackie...) But at the same time I see used JBL 4430s going for about the same money. I have a rather big listening room, (84m3, or a stiff 3000 cubic feet) but I really can't drag these 80 kilo monsters in there to try them out, so I'm not sure where to spend my money. Any thougts lads? Are those monsters only good for impressing clients, or are they great for mixing as well?

Yea, thats what I'm afraid of! I mostly do jazz or other more, eh, natural, sounding stuff, so I guess the "wow" factor would rather turn in to a "what?" factor! :) I'll probably get a pair of Dynaoudios or ADAMs instead, those I at least have the possibility of trying out beforehand. But it kind of hurts to have to buy new stuff, with the increadible deals that can often be had on used gear...

Yeah, thats what I'm thinking! But the only really good deal I've found for a while is the JBLs. A few months ago I actually found a pair of S4A demo units going for about $3400, but then I didn't feel I could stretch that far. (And I didn't have the time to go to Stockholm to check them out.) I'm beginning to regret that now. :(

Speaking of monitors, some guy at harmony central is selling a pair of genelec 1031a's for $1800, which is about half price. Are these worth it? I was thinking of Mackie 824's originally. Also, ADAM has a pair of monitors advertised in the mags for a lot less than the figures you guys are quoting, maybe $1800, don't remember the model numbers. Are ADAMS really that good?

Well, if you believe Julian, they are! (And I can se no reason not to. :) ) Myself I'm looking around to see if there is a shop anyware near where I can compare the Dynaudios and the ADAMs. (And preferably Mackie and JBL LSR28P too, but hey, you cant get everyting.) If I'm successful, I'll let you know what I thought!

And yes, there are cheaper, nearfiled, models. The one mentioned above is more of a mid-field monitor. (They do main monitors too, but I'd rather not think about it... :) )
