hi, i just have the art-tps,and this is the first time i use this recording with vu -meters,how you set the level,how far can igo in to the red? can it peak sometimes in the red ?

While on that subject, I remember reading a post by RecorderMan (oops... Recordman2, sorry) describing the use of VU meters by Geoff Emerick when adding the bass track to the mix.
I’ve seen “old school” engineers use VU meters extensively in mixing.
In DAWs I hardly see VU meters anymore.
I would like to know more about the use of VU meters in mixing.

A VU meter isn't the be all end all of level setting. It's ok to let it hit red and stay pegged if it sounds good. How is your A/D converter calibrated? Usually 0VU is equal to -15dBfs. Usually that's a good thing to aim for.
