They are pretty good for the money.

I have a pair of 603's that sound very nice. I also have a 1006 that I have had good luck recording vocals on. Sure a $1000 mic will sound better, but for a home studio you sure don't get $900 better.

I can't really say because I've never tried one, but I can however offer you an alternative around the same money.

The Studio Projects C1 is a great mic that I own, and it gets favorable reviews around here. Also, the Kel HM1 would be a good choice from what I've read. Don't think you can go wrong with either of those mics.

I haven't found fault with MXL. They are super cheap, and i dunno about quality control, but i've gotten good results with mine.

Hi, I purchased the MXL 990/991 mic kit based on reviews from other users, and I have to tell you. I don't like them at all. I am looking at the SP c1 and some Rodes. I guess I expected too much. 2 mics for $99 is too good to be true, at least in my experience. I found them way to thin sounding with no warmth at all on both vocals and acoutic guitar. I haven't tried any other MXL mic's, so I can't comment on the other models.

i have an MXL V63M. I paid $99 for the mic and a shockmount. it was my first (and currently, only, large-diaphragm condenser)

at first i thought it was OKAY. but now that i've actually recorded some stuff and have some mixes under my belt, i don't like it at all. the high end is rough and brittle and cheap-sounding and just makes me cringe thinking about it. "no warmth at all" -exactly.

the prices are tempting, but im going to stay away from MXL in the future.

Maybe I was goin a bit much on the cheap side, though it i s tempting buying mics for thoose prices.
And the reviews are quite varying form good to bad, but I think Quantety over quality will be the issue with theese mic`s so I`m passing them and looking towards SP c1.

Any one have two good overhead mics for drums two recomend.

what do you intend to record with the mic??...

the mxl 990 does lack the mids (warmth).... no doubt at all... but it can be utilised in a few situations....

The MXL mics do(as do most mics) pass signal and have tonal aspects to them.Whether these are sounds you'd like on your projects is totally subjective and a matter of personal taste.The Studio Projects stuff is well made and though can be a bit hyped(arent they all???) all I have heard with them has been usable.I own a B3 and seemingly not a lot is written about this mic.Its better sounding than the B1(go figure) and maybe because of the patterns.I've heard a TB3 and liked it .For non-hyped ie:artificially hyped for clarity in the upper mids, I like the ADK mics.These retain clarity whilst emulating classic German mic sound.While there are few substitutes for a true old German mic,(really there are a few!), its refreshing to know that some companies are able to incorporate inexpensive and quality together to achieve great sounding equipment.The Hamberg and the Vienna series ADK's do just that.Both street under $300.

I`m starting to lean towards the studio projects b1, this will be the first Condenser I ever buy, so I figure its ok to start out with something cheap.
And the B1 seems to have a descent reputation.

I`m thinking of buying two B1`s , so that i can use them as drum overheads as well, untill maybe on day I get a hold of some thing better.

Please tell me that using the b1 for drum Oh and vocals will be ok...
On a small bugdet, hence getting a lot of stash, like shure sm57`s, monitors and a new audio interface.
