When an artist wants to own his master, are they actual tapes or CDs? If so how do they get to that format from the CD? I know the distributors need a certain format to copy the CD but what format is that?

Your DAWs mix engine may use 32-bit float, but that has nothing to do with the "resolution" of the sample.
The artist should tell you what they want, and it should be detailed in the contract. I have worked for some people that had me transfer all completed session files to a hard drive. Some to DVDs. If you are mixing to analog, obviously they want the tapes. There used to be a couple of standards used by the pressing plants. One was an expensive Sony standard. You can pretty much send CDs to your mastering engineer, and he will send CDs to the pressing plant. So copies of both of those would suffice.

My bad, what i meant to state was that if recorded at 24bit, bounce to 24, if recorded at 16bit, bounce to 16, However, I prefer to mantain the mixengine resolution of 32bit float and let the mastering house deal with the conversions.
