Try looking into the Electro-Voice RE20/27 a beautiful dynamic microphone suitable both for voices, bass drums and many other applications. You may also want to consider the Beyer M160 ribbon microphone with an additional foam pop-filter? That microphone will warmup Ice Cube! Some people think that condenser microphones are a prerequisite for recording vocals. They are not! Many smart engineers know just how lovely some dynamic microphones can sound. It has nothing to do with budget. Michael Jackson, Bono, Steven Tyler are some of the few multi-platinum rock and roll artists who regularly recorded their lead vocals with a simple SM58 in their hand. While Michael uses a SM 7 on a stand as it is not as convenient to hand hold. So roll out your misconceptions about always having to use "Studio Condenser Microphones".

out of curiosity, what mic preamp would you be using for tracking these vox? I agree with a nice dynamic mic as well for what you are looking for, but sending that through a nice tube mic pre might add that little bit extra to help you achieve your goal.

I really like the Rode NTK for vocals. It's a $500 tube mic. It warms up vocals and is silky smooth and clean across pretty much its whole range. I like a warm, vintage kinda sound on my vocal tracks, and my NTK gives me the sound I like. Everyone's ears are different, and my definition of warm, vintage sound could be very different from yours. But for $500, the NTK is the best vocal tube condenser mic you could buy.

If you want a more exaggerated warm sound, see if you can find a copy of Antares microphone modeler software. According to Antares its supposed to turn any decent mic into a mic costing 10 times as much. The manufactrer's hype is totally wrong. I don't think any of the settings actually sound like the mic they're supposed to be modeling, but you can get some pretty cool sounds of it. You can max out the fake 'tube saturation' level to coat the vocals with more warmth than anyone would want. On some voices that sounds pretty cool, but I know some people might cringe at hearing it.

If you want a dynamic mic, the sennheiser 421 sounds really cool on some voices, although I think the NTK sounds better more frequently.

You shouldn't have any problem finding an sm57 to try out. Pretty much everyone that records anything has at least one. I kinda cringe at hearing it used for vocals, and not just because Bono and Steven Tyler use them. I would cringe at them singing no matter what they used. I just haven't been able to get the vocal sound I want out of my sm57. That doesn't mean the sound isn't in there, hidden somewhere that I could find it if I tried a little harder, it's just that I'm lazy and I'd rather get the sound I want the easy way.
