I have a thread going over in the "Mastering" forum that includes some discussions on the BBE Sonic Maiximizer. It was interesting to hear some of the comments that came from the mastering specialists over there.

I love the plugin myself, but also feel that it is really easy to over-do, especially on the low end frequencies. My understanding is that it boosts the high and low ends, then adds slight delays to these frequencies as well. This is obviously a psycho-acoustic type of processor. What I really like about the BBE is that it seems to add "depth" and a wider stereo spread to my mixes that I just love.
I am curious if anyone has any experience with the Waves S1 Stereo Imager? I am wondering if this might be a good alternative to the BBE, considering how I use it?

Hi, I use both, however I have the hardware version of the 822A. I've only used the 822 for live applications. PA systems to give a kick ass improvement to the entire sound. I kept the board /mix very flat and then put the 822 on the entire mix before the crossover.
The Waves S1 Stereo Imager isn't the same at all. I use that in PT for acoustic guitar mostly. Maybe back ground vocals too. It adds a wideing effect making a single mono mix come more alive. There are a few more waves plugins that I like for that instead.
C4 is a great alternative IMO for the 822. But then again I've never used the 822 in mastering. I think I might try it now. The C4 takes a dull radio mix and turns it into FM if ya follow me.

I have a dodgy AIWA combo home stereo that has a BBE knob and button. The thing sounds like mud without the knob turned to maximum and the button pressed. I've never really known what goes on behind that BBE button. Interesting marketing though, make a extra crappy sounding unit and then put a fix in it, so people can A/B this new 'feature' and hear how much better it sounds. This is my only experience with this... BBE.
Don't tell anyone, but I sometimes listen with it on the 'Mud' setting when I have one of those awful "Digitally Remastered" CDs with old jazz and classical recordings on them. It makes them sound MUCH nicer.

well I think they upgraded it a bit hehe and the home stereo unit ain't quite the same but who knows... I personally like a flat stereo and have never seen it in one. I don't know if they make the 822A anymore but my god I hope it works better than your home stereo extra :c:

I have a BBE 422 Sonic Maximizer and i did a lot of mixing of instrumental music, witch fits well. But as soon I put music with lead signer and push it hard it becomes rapidly harsh.
You have to go sublty, if you crank it up all the way (to 11) you may have one of the two problems:
1- too dark sounding monitors or program material or
2- You hould see your audiologist! ;) :p
