What are you using for a pop filter?

Um, well yeah! That's why they invented the SM58! Try a foam pop filter and eat it on the microphone. All will be well then on your SM57. Why do you think you see so many SM58s on television? They're great! No frosted flakes.

Shure used to (and still does?) make a foam windscreen for the SM57, and it solves all those popping issues. I wouldn't use it for vocals without it. (Take a look at older shots of Springstgeen and/or Ray Charles among many others. They were the mic of choice for many.)

I forget the model #, but I'm sure it's there on Shure's website somewhere. There's a plastic black ring with a set screw on the side to let you secure it to the mic body, and the foam is sqaured off on top of the mic.

It's a slightly tighter and more "in your face" sound than the 58, but many prefered it in those days. I know I did on many occasions. (Tom Petty used to use a 57 for a long long time, he may still be, for all I know.) If you look at the repsonse curve for the 57 vs the 58, you'll see a slight difference. IMHO, it's all due to the ball on the 58 with the foam inside the wire ball. Otherwise, they're identical mics.

FWIW, I'm told the Audix i5 is a great mic, as well.

I am not diggin on the foam covers too much, i just hate the feel.

So thats like a last route option for me.

I don't think i've actually tried a 58 (I know Iknow, thats like saying i've never tried Vanilla Ice Cream). How would an SM58 compare to the AT814. does the 58 have very good noise rejection?

Okay, so I checked out Shure's website for the foam thingy and found the A2WS which is not your normal Nasta-Foam mic cover.

Plus, its only $10 at sweetwater. cheaper than buying a new Mic.

You guys may have just saved my bacon.
