The 01V96 and the HD24 are a good match, and a common combination, so there are plenty of folks around here who could help you out if you get stuck.

There are Yahoo groups for both the HD24 and for the 01V96, where problems and usage get aired in a refreshingly civil manner.

If you want to use automation with the 01V96 (it's the only model in the Yamaha "0" range without built-in automation), you need to use software that supports the 01V96 via MIDI. Check the list - Nuendo, PT, Cubase SX are all OK. Here's the link for Cubase:

I have an HD24 which I am using with an A&H Mixwiz that I've had forever. I definitely think I'd be buying a Yamaha digital board if I were buying today. A question for others - If he is using the converters for the Yamaha, what are the factors in choosing between the HD24 and the HD24XR? Just sample rates?

If you mean that he use the converters in the Yamaha digital mixer, the answer is no, the sample rates for HD24 digital in/out are the same for the HD24 as for the HD24XR. Both will do 24 channels at 48KHz and 12 channels at 96KHz via ADAT.

The HD24 is limited to 48KHz in analog mode. However, the big point is that the HD24XR has much better A-D and D-A converters, and they also allow 96KHz analog operation (12-channel). Having owned and used HD24, HD24XR and 01V96s for many years, my (subjective) opinion is that the HD24 converters are not quite as good as the 01V96 converters, but the HD24XR converters are way out in front in a different league. I've used most of the other Yamaha digital boards up to a DM2000, and I would say the XR converters are even better than the converters in any of those mixers. I know of studios that have bought HD24XRs purely to run as 24-channel ADAT I/O converters.

That's quite an endorsement. I've been pretty please with most of the gear purchases I've made over the years. Today must be the day for highlighting those decisions in the "penny wise - pound foolish" category. Getting the HD24 instead of the HD24XR seems to be one.

Might be worth checking with Remy - I know she's an HD24XR user.

I also own an HD24. It replaced all the tape machines. I actually like the fact that it is destructive recording as I still work like the old days. Do it right or come back when you can.

The Yamaha and the HD24 is a very very good setup. The XR converters are much better but the basic unit still works fine. They did make an upgrade converter for the basic unit. I would like that one for myself as I am still analog with the console and the outboard. Either that or get serious and get Radar or ProTools HD.................hmmmmmmm.......

I would imagine there are literally thousands of Yamaha/Alesis setups in project studios, basement labs, second and third rooms throughout the world. I wouldnt be surprised at ANY records that were made with these units sounding great and selling well.

Like you've already heard, the HD24XR and Yomamaha is a very common and solid combination.

I run two of the standard HD24's and a GS3000 in the mobile rig. So far, very happy. Then too, I tend to track 24 tracks at a time of live performances, so I wouldn't really benefit from the XR at this point. I run both HD24's in parallel as back-up to each other.

The only thing I'd even consider replacing them with is a RADAR. The reason being is how rugged the RADAR is, and the fact that it gets me analog on location.

I "use" an HD3 rig here in the studio... actually I'm just starting to use an HD3 rig... but the system is working in basic principal so far...

Transfer the .wav's to a server and import them into PT for mix and edit.

The one thing I definitely have to recommend is a UPS on the HD. Unless you hit "Stop" the file header does not get written. If you loose power while recording... you have a long fight to recover your files. Other than that... they've pretty much been rock solid here.

I also got a pair of HD24's among many other recording options and while not 100%, I find it it be a decently reliable product. And while the XR converter upgrade is better and worth the price charged, the regular version is more than adequate for most projects.
