Sdelux u95 (similar to u195 i assume) seems nice aswell...
and i'm pretty sure AT 40xx would be redundant somewhat...
haven't had a chance to sample any Gefell's either
need some details on what this "alice" is aswell
what's the main diffrence between 184 & 84?
don't say "smoother"
i've tried the 184 and wasn't too impressed at the price range....

Right, your microphone closet is missing INSURANCE! And yes, the venerable U87 can't be beat neither can the old KM 84. You may want to consider the AEA ribbons and/or a Royer? Don't forget about some of the Sennheiser condensers, their fabulous and quite different.

For someone with such a nice mic cabinet an '87 is a must as you already have your other bases covered- just for the flash, like someone said- besides theres a sheen to it that its hard to descibe or imitate...

other than that maybe a gefell m930 or a nice soundelux mic... ( so many great ones to choose from)

I gotta add my kudos to the KEL mic...I got fer Xmas and it is a very well-made piece and will have its use in any session I happen to run. Cant say enogh about it!

87's......GAWD are they expensive as far as retail ....I've spent many many hours with a couple of em hooked up to various things recording various noises and have yet to HATE it.

The SM81 is also one of those mics that has 'something' to its sound.

Five of those, two 87's and a D12 or a 409 used to be my drum mic set.

And in answer to your question regarding KM184/84....

WAY SMOOTHER....sorry. They just are. ANd this is a case of that word perfectly representin whut it is. The KM184 is a killer snare mic.

I dont think there is, unless you go to a studio and he has 12 SM57's. That's a bit much, IMHO
Just as long as they are different to some degree or another. I can see having 2 of each mic, but keep your mic collection so that you have alot of choice's for various sounds and instruments.

To the original poster, from your list I just don't see very many "sexy" mics, like high quality tube LDCs, you have more than enough mics to do any job. At this point it's coming to adding higher dollar mics, but if you aren't charging top dollar studio rates, $80/hour+ then you are fine with what you have.

FWIW, I'd rather have less microphones of higher quality than more microphones of lesser quality. As an example, here is my mic locker, I could probably get by with 70% of this list, but the stuff I would keep would be the medium to high dollar mics (to me medium price would be around $1500).

I have my eye on an original Rode Classic. Perfect. Its got a few hours on it ....from a guy who simply has more money than sense...one of those spot-it-buy-it guys.....I dont know if I can get my cash together for it but would turn you or some mic lover on to it......email me.....

More predictable and just a damn fine mic in general.

It and the 87 though are completely different mics - nowhere close to the same sound.

got two HM1's in the mail today, try them out on saturday
and ive got two alice comming in the mail
(too bad he couldn't get me a stereo one though....)

I'd say to the original poster that your mic cabinet has most bases covered, though any gaps would likely be a good ribbon mic and, as others have said, a "sexy name tube mic."

Having said that, if you can't get good sounds given your current mic cabinet, you're doing something wrong....
