Here's a subject I don't recall being discussed lately. It seems many mic preamps these days have high-z DI jacks built in. In my case I've got 'em on my API 3124+, Vintech 1272, TUBE TECH MP-1a, and Demeter H-series. I also happen to have dedicated DI boxes in the form of an Avalon U5, anda couple of Countryman Type 85 FET's.
It would seem with about 13 channels of DI that I have than anyone in their right mind would ever need (and that's not counting my cheap passive boxes that I use for live sound gigs), yet I find myself still occasionally tempted by the ad-copy by Aguilar and some others.
So, does anyone know of any DI shootouts recently? And is there any particular advantage that a dedicated DI has over the DI's in the mic preamps? I would have thought that maybe a DI bundled in a $2000 preamp would be superior to that found in a box costing a few hundred, but I think I've heard opinions to the contrary.
(This begs the question of why I haven't done a shootout with my own gear/ears. The answer is time, moral turpitude, and an obviously underdeveloped work ethic!) :)

.,..TANX ever so much...realize that my expertise is not Harvey Gertz level, but for 'bang-for-buck' level, the countryman does what it should..keep itself 'out of the way'...its not an avalon or an API but for DI-ed instruments it should be fine.....

I find that the DI preamp is harder to distinguish the main differences, Bass being the acception. Probably because our ears recognize Vox frequencies better and I never listen to vocals through a DI. But I can definatley tell when a DI isn't cutting it for frequencies uner 180. 8K Crispness can be lost as well.
I haven't done any shotouts myself but I'd love to have the time. I have some nice tube ones built in on the HHB Classic 70. It retails for around $2395 2 channel tube pre amp, DI, 4 band tube parametric EQ on each channel thaht can be linked.
I don't work for HHB. I just got this sucker about a month ago and have been very pleased.
This would be a good test.
