Just a quick reminder to go out and buy some books on recording and really read them. There is a plethora of magic bullet questions like what's the "best" mic for this...or what's the "best" way to record this. There is nothing that makes the biggest difference than how you place, gain stage and balance. If I just had 57's and a Mackie I'd blow the doors off a newbie with access to OceanWay. Really. ask specific questions, more about how to dial what you've got. Damn near and equipment can work if used properly. Significant improvements can be had with something as simple as the relative settings of the mic preamp gain and channel fader...let alone, etc.
And there is no "best", muskc and art is about communicating choice and perpspective, and as such is relative and subjective. Thier is relative better and worse..but this isn't a race.

I think the issue has become option anxiety...there are so many products from which to select that everyone wants the 'sound of the week' at the cheapest price.
Internet research is only a small starting point... I've learned more by fiddling with mic placement for 30 minutes than I have reading internet articles for 10 hours.
That said, gimme an RE16, SM7, and a Neve, and I'll record anything you want.

To me its even more than having all the options and having so many places that someone is touting this and that piece to achieve a sound, its more like laziness in a lot of cases.What a lot of folks dont seem to realize, is the people making recomendations might have spent many a day,night,weekend,every waking hour... to come up with this solution.So they've done the legwork and it seems a lot of guys think they can simply buy the sound they seek without understanding its true nature and all the subtleties that go with it.The really great engineers and producers are going to get their sound no matter what desk and outboard there is.Obviously there will be some differences due to gear, but overall the sound will be there.This can always be attributed to experience and knowledge gained through these experiences.You cannot buy experience you must earn it the hard way.

Well said. I too have noticed that many treat this site as shopping advice when there's so much more to be learned here. The expersite countained in the members and moderators of this site is the best on the entire internet and people should really take advantage of it more.
