I bought a few of the Audix D2's earlier this year to use a "second sound" as tom mics, and they work pretty well.

My first choice are my MD421's, but I have found the D2's sound pretty good also, and are just bit "different" sounding.

ATM25 fit the requirement, and are plentiful on eBay for 85 ~ 100 used. They are $139 shipped every day from Zzounds. I own (3) for drums, and like what I hear.

Cool, thanks for the tips. What about the EV 408? Anyone have good luck with those?

Any other suggestions? Audix D2? Bueller?

ATM Pro35 clip on condenser.. 135 each... killer I love mine !

Try a Beyer M201.
It's makes for a great snare mic too with far less hat bleed than a 57 due to it hypercardiod polar pattern.

For a bit more coin but not necessarily better try a Sennheiser 441 or 421.

What do you folks think of the Beta56? I see them all over, and they're pretty close to the same price as the D2...

I've never had a chance to really test either one out. No one here mentions the Beta56 tho... I hear good stuff about the D2 all the time ;)

Well for now I wound up w/ the Audix DP-2 drum combo kit: 1 D1, 2 D2's, and 1 D4 for $300 on eBay! Too good to pass up.

I figured this will fit the bill for a while, until I can afford to upgrade. Or maybe they'll be good enough! I'll let you know...

It may be hard to find a Ev408, the new one is EV468. The D2's are pretty cool, and E604.
I think the e609 has a more smooth top end. The D2
sounds similar to the 421, but not as bitting or a lack of a better word/description.

belive it or not, AKG 451 with 10 or 20 db pad !
that rules.

I like my BLUE Ball for a deep tom tone, especialy floor tom, but it's beyond your budget (which is a moot point anyway, because you've already bought a mic) :)

I have heard the D4 and the D1, and was not as impressed as I am with the D2's. The D2's and the D6 are just great drum mics...period!

I thought I would never say this, but I am beginning to turn to the D2's more often then the MD421!!! This last session there was no doubt that the D2's sounded much better imho then the 421's! Ouch! That hurts to say that!

Obviously, each kit, style, song and player makes a difference. I have not given up on the 421's, quite the contrary, but it has been a real eye-opener lately to see how Audix has just been stealing my heart (and money!) for drums.

Now to try their lollypop condensor.... :)

Well I use the Beta 56 all the time. I too think it's strange nobody talks about them, but I think it's because nobody uses them. They are very good. I've done many recordings with them. No complaints and a lot of compliments. Good sound. Though but because we have them and 421s in the studio already I'm probably going to purchase D2s for toms at home. Maybe SP B1s. I'm still open. I have some Christmas money you see . . .

The Audix drum kit with the D1,D2's, and the D4 at $300 is a great buy! Congratulations! As you get opportunities to use these mics you will find many many more uses for them than is listed in the brochure.In recent sessions, I used the D1 for harmonica.It was as good as any mic I've ever heard on this!Clean and clear yet it had the attitude of your typical harp mic.The D4 is a great mic on bass guitar and guitar cabinets.Very full and ballsy, plus the sensitivity is a bit lower so you can really get it in close.I use the D2 on the upper and lower mic on a leslie.Very nice and its basically an instant sound as it needed nothing but proper placement.The D4 also makes a nice kick drum mic.I use it right on the beater and use an ATM25 out at the edge of the drum and combine the two sounds.It makes it very easy to build a great kick sound with the two.I also use the D2's on top and bottom snare.And as always, the D2's are really good studio and live tom mics and the D4 works really well on a floor tom.
