Can any sampling "experts" or aficianados in here tell this novice how one goes about sampling, for instance, the drum parts of a song from a CD (input from a CD player) without the sounds of other instruments/voices in the song mix getting into the sample (i.e., isolating the drum parts)? Does this require a particular kind of gear (or software)? Many advance thanks for your advice.

No, you can't just take one part from a audio redbook CD and take it out of the mix....you can try but it won't come out the way you want it to since you would have to EQ the hell out of it.
I'm sure there are sample CD's that have those sounds you are looking for somewhere....look hard enough and you will find them!

Typically, here's how I see it done (although I do it differently since I have ga-buddles of samples at my fingertips).
Producer X loves the NEPTUNES drums sounds. He wants them. He buys the Kelis record (when the Neptunes weren't really the favor of the month yet). He listens to the hit single. :) AES out of said CD player, through an AES to Coax converter into Producer X's MPC3000. There is a 'cheat' of sorts, but it's never really science, and depends on how the song was mix, fo sampling vocals off a CD. Flip one side out of phase and but the mix in mono. This usually sounds like crapola to me, but one of my producers thinks I'm god because of it, when it works that is. (please don't make me explain how/why is does/does not work other than to say it's about phase relationship). Another trick is, if you can find a part of the song where only the instruments play, take that, and add it in with the single with the drums only out of phase. In theory, this will phase cancel everything but the drums (but it never really works). And the last option is to use BNR. "Learn" a section with the instruments, then "Fit" the plug in to "NR" the instruments out. This usually makes everything sound MP3ish and wobbley.
You're other best bet is to find out who engineered the record, and hire them, and hopefully they print a "drums dat" after every mix (as I do).
Many thanks from all for the advice. Is anyone in here familiar
Many thanks from all for the advice. Is anyone in here familiar with the great (and, oddly enough, relatively obscure) jazz vocalist formerly known as Leon Thomas (I do not recall his changed name)? I'd love to have a sample of his vocal stylings. In the off chance someone here knows if such material exists, pull my coat. Naive me! All these years I always thought that some how, the hip-hop boys had been ripping James Brown and Parliment-Funkadelic samples right of the records!

I am pretty sure what you are asking is not possible, at least not to *totally* isolate it. That would require the original multitrack.
