Even though Logic is a great compositin tool, it can also be used as a pure recorder.

You could also use Digital Performer, some peoples needs are met by Audiodesk. It's basically Digital Performer without midi features, but it only comes bundled with MOTU interfaces.

Tracktion is becoming a strong contender, Also Ableton's Live.

Can't suggest Cubase SX, it's the official G4 killer, don't even attempt with less than a dual G5.

For starters you could try Garage Band it can record up to eight tracks at a time, and may already be on your powerbook.

for your response, I didn't know I could edit audio with Logic.
I do audio production for a radio station and use Adobe Audition on a PC, I just record the voice and mix it with music clips (pre-recorded) that I import from file or CD; now I want to try using my Mac.
I have a program on the Powerbook called Soundtrack, it can do something similar but it does not have any efects (reverb, flanger...) nor can use VTS plug-ins.
I hope some day Adobe audiotion release a Mac version.
Can MBox-Protools be an option? Can I use just the software without pluging in the actual box?

Protools is an option. Yes absolutely but i would also seriously consider Garageband. Don't let the name fool you. Although it is a consumer program it offers many powerful tools including a built in ducking effect for doing voice-overs with music backing. Loop editing, soft synth, Au and VST effects support. It has a built in audio editor and comes bundled with quite a few loops which you could use to put together some relatively original backing tracks. Bonus is that if you already have hardware, it's on less thing for you to invest in. If you want to go ProTools you'll need to invest in a Digidesign or M-audio interface.

Can I use just the software without pluging in the actual box?

The answer is no. PT is proprietary that way the software won't run unless the unit is plugged in. But the Mbox is small and PT LE is powerful enough to do pro level stuff on it in the right hands. I haven't worked enough with the other options being offered to make a comment other than GarageBand like the original Sonic Foundry Acid is a lot of fun and is easy to use.

Sound Track can use plugins, and if you have Sound Track Pro it contains all of the effects found in Logic Pro.

You can access them from the mixer window, OSX comes with a basic set of Apple AU effects including the excellent Apple Matrix Reverb. All effect parameters can be automated.

I think its time you bust open the manual!
