hey guys i brought this question up before but i had no luck. I am using a mac g5 and i am trying to connect this external hard drive that i had laying around so i can record straight to it. I try to play my pro tools files off of the drive and it says that the drive needs to be set up for play back and record in workspace. I go into workspace in pro tools and try to change this and i get a message saying that my hard drive can not be designated as an audio playback volume because it is not a valid audio volume. My guess is that i need a real external hard drive that is either compatible or something made for recording and playing back audio? It is a western digital usb drive i believe its called my book. Well anyway thanks in advance guys!

Firewire still has a higher sustained throughput than USB 2.0. That is why it is impossible to find a USB interface that supports more than two simultaneous tracks at a time. Think I'm wrong? Prove it. I will back down, given the evidence.

Because it is a USB drive, whether 1.0 or 2.0, it can only stream a single stereo track at a time and so cannot be designated as an audio drive. If you can find yourself a cheap firewire enclosure (usually between $30-$130) that should fix your problem. There shouldn't be any issue with the actual hard drive itself so long as it is a reasonably fast drive.
