I'm not sure where I should place this question, but I need to find a good sound card for recording vinyl to digital format.

I used to have a SB0600 which was OK, but now it's starting to die. I would like to get something better than this. I've looked around and there seem to be few sound cards that have popped up so I thought I'd see what people would suggest. Here they are:

Audiophile 2496
Delta 44
E-MU 1212

Also please feel free to recommend something else if you like. My setup is a http://support.gate…"]Gateway GM5420 Desktop[/]="http://support.gate…"]Gateway GM5420 Desktop[/] which I converted from Vista to XP. The software that I use to record is Audiograbber. If any more information is needed, let me know I will supply it.

Thanks in advance.

Any of those interfaces would be fine. Consider that you'll need a phono preamp. Consider Audacity for your software. It has some reasonable cleaning plugins. Might help to get rid of static noise.

You could also try Acid express(also free) which has some nice features for working with audio montage. Keep in mind that it is freeware so there are some limitations such as, you can't save your project. Only export to 16bit 44.1kHz wave.

The E-MU 1212M gives you great quality and great value that is downright not matched by anyone else at this time. The converter quality alone is worth the price. The included software bundle of good and useable DAW software is also unmatched. Add the power and flexability of the PatchMix DSP mixer and you got a powerful and expandable system. Don't get me wrong, it is not a perfect product, and it has it's quarks but the overall value, performance and sound quality is well worth the minor issues.

Thank you for the replies. I will consider all of this. The current setup is a phono connected to an amp connected to line-in of the current sound card. The input is recorded with Audiograbber (now free :-)) and then cleaned and cut. Audacity is good too, I've played around with it as well...

I have one other question (probably dumb) question: if I want to use a mic will I need some more hardware in addition to one of these cards? This is more for other things like Skype.

I appreciate all of your help.

"Audacity is good"
You make me cry.

Mic: If you want real quality then you will require a microphone preamp, and the microphone itself.
But I would be happy with a simple computer microphone plugged into the pink jack for Skype, in-game chat etc.
I actually use a USB headset with a mic on it for that, and also once used it to tune my guitar.

well brother, even when this card i'll recommend to you is not on the one you listed before, i think you should think about an Edirol UA-4FX, it gives you great sound recording out of noise and static sht, and you can connect any analog equipment (such a vinyl player) and speakers, even the mike you want for skype thing, hope it's helps...
