I have it on sound forge 8 and I am assuming it is to find out what freq in a mix need to be increased or attenuated (for example 160 hz is way overpowering in a song). Am I on the right track with this line of thought? Thanks all.

It's already been said, don't get into the habit of reliance.
However, as a learning tool it can be good for examining a commercial track you like the tonality of and then doing A/B comparisons.
If you have an external one with a mic plugged in you can do all sorts of wonderful room measurements also. They are used in live sound to e.q. the front of house.

Hmmm... First, how does it sound? I think this could be something like a tool, something to show you the freqs used and by how much but you should try it by yourself... crank or shut down that 160hz on that mix that you like and it won`t sound good. Depends on styles, instruments used etc.. But I doubt that will make it sound better.
