Get both, they're not that expensive. They work great on bass, kick drums, toms, voice

They are fairly similar, but I would get the EV first and the Shure later down the road.

I haven't used the SHURE but I can tell you that the RE20 is a great kick mic. I have also used it for vocals when I wanted a more silky "lounge-lizard" sound. I saw a picture in a recording magazine where the vocalist was standing in front of some large diaphragm mic upside down and an RE20 was about two feet in front about belt level, pointed at the singer's head.
