Just got a new pair of mics- Sanken CU-31. I got a great deal on a pair of them (consecutive serial numbers and I got them for more than $1000 off the pair). I just used them for the first time and I must say I'm absolutely thrilled with them.
They have a wonderfully transparent sound, but with sort of a "sparkle" on the top end. I'd actually compare the sound of them to Schoeps, but with a bit more on the top. The Schoeps would be almost rich sounding compared to these (they are that transparent).
Technically, the polar plot has about a 2 dB rise at about 8K so they aren't completely flat... The diaphragm is a 1 micron titanium diaphragm.
Anyways, I'm looking forward to putting these mics through their paces over the next couple weeks, but so far I'm really digging what I've heard...
8-)

I've never used a Sanken that I haven't liked... Most of them I've used, though, have been in the film world. They make great lav mics and the CUB-1 is probably one of the best boundary mics on the market. Their shotguns are also great and for set work (I prefer them to the traditional Sennheisers), their mid-side mic is also quite nice. This is the first time I've used one of their studio mics, though. Even at full price, they would be a great mic to get (just not the same kind of deal that I got. )

That says a mouthful right there. If they make Schoeps sound rich, they must be sparkly clean...
Congrats on the deal...isn't it great when that happens on E-bay - you get a product for a great deal sometimes just because the right people aren't looking at the right time?
Enjoy! We want to hear samples!

That is correct. John Eargle liked the dual diaphragm CU 41 model. He actually loaned me his personal-pair for a recording I was doing for the Delos label in New Zealand, with the orchestra (he couldn't make that GIG). They are strictly cardioids. I had planned on using Neumann KM86s, in an MS configuration but instead ran as ORTF with the Sankens.

Hi Ben
Congratulations on your new toys! $1000 off sounds like a great deal. I've been rather curious about the Co-Z with its 'perfect' omni polar pattern.
Looking forward to hearing more details as you get to know them.
Enjoy :)
