Okay, in a moment of brilliance, I switched off ACPI in my BIOS. The reasoning was, well, you should disable any power management that might interfere with your DAW. Nevermind that I wasn't really having any problems before.

Well I am now. As Windows 98 tries to boot, it now searches for new hardware and tries to install new drivers for everything. I gather the change did something to Plug 'n Play.

I'm writing this from work where I don't mess with the machine. My DAW is on:
ABIT BE6-II
Celeron @ 950Mhz
512 RAM
Win 98

Hep me! I'se stoopid! TIA.

Well, any OS that you change from ACPI to Standard PC when relaoding will want to reload all the drivers for most PCI cards and so forth.
When it asks for the drivers just point it to the Windows and System folders..usually the INF folder and System32 folder..all the drivers are there just need to be located.
If you cant find it by browsing try the search for files and folders option from the Start menu.
Not sure how well 98 likes having the ACPI turned off....

Evidently, not very well would seem to be the answer. Thanks, Opus! I switched back the BIOS tweaks and managed to get Windows to load. Had to zap a couple duplicaes from the Device Mgr. Haven't tested everything, but I'll try all the software tonight. When something inevitably comes up missing, I'll try pointing it to the files you mentioned. Once again, yuda man!

The big lesson here is to leave well enough alone. If you're functioning properly, there's no need to try a tweak just because someone mentions in online. You can find yourself in Total Reinstall Hell where you'll have me, a self-described Dumma$$, for company.

I thought I'd learned this well enough, but evidently not. I had performed all of Opus's recommended tweaks and had a fine running DAW until I had to go and try something I didn't really understand from someone else's thread about their totally different rig. I hope that others may benefit from my suffering, or at least have a good laugh. Much luv and respect to all on this board!
