I've been recording a while, as an MC.
I've been doing free shows in my city and I'm relatively well known locally.

The problem is, is that I'm broke with no money to spend on my image and distribution and stuff like that.

No money for videos and cameras and all that.

I just want to hear from a professional opinion...how to break through that barrier and get noticed by big name producers and get noticed period..and start getting paid for this.
Because people ask me when I get off stage...do you have merch...do you have this or that...why in gods name aren't you signed...
and its flattering but I reply welp. cuz I'm broke...and i dont have a street team to back me up.

Any general advice?

Post a 1 camera YouTube video or two of your shows. With the Internet age you don't have to move to LA or NY. Just keep doing what you're doing locally. Post it on YouTube. If it's THAT good then word will spread. Otherwise it's a struggle. Welcome to the music biz....

You're not likely going to break through any barrier. You'r local connections are really important. If anything, make those stronger. Put on shows that people around you can support. Let people around you know that you need help to fund your next project/album.

In this day, it's all about finding creative ways to fund your projects. I just created a topic discussion about Amanda Palmer's new TED video. She talks about how she uses her connections to support her band.
