when I record a band they all get plugged into a head phone amp so each person can hear what they are doing over the recording and i can hear as well and can adjust their levels to their preference.

now when i am adjusting levels and i have them do a run though of their songs. Should they be hearing the adjustments I'm making on the board and on the recorder? and the addition of effects?

is there a slot that the headphone amp shoud be conneced, other than the main headphone out on the board or the main headphone out on the recorder?

I need to know, they are coming to record soon : ) or is there any cetain procedure a commercial studio would follw that i could follow in the sense of headphone monitoring?

Andy,
Common practice is to send the talent a separate pre fader aux mix, that remains constant through out the recording process. It is very disconcerting to hear the mix change as you are performing and it would likely piss the band off in a major way. This is one reason why many people use a small mixer to monitor with while recording ... splitting the mic pre outs and sending one split to the DAW and the other through the mixer to the phones via an aux send. This way you can tweak away at the DAW while you monitor it and the phone mix will remain constant. Just be sure to pay attention to the phone mix too, checking it every once in a while.

Just one problem, what if my mixer doesnt have any outs to go to the main mixer, cuase im working with a mackie 1202 and a 1604, the 1604 being my main, that i will tweak and levels adjust.

the 1202 will be most likely the mixer the band will be playing though and listening with the head phone amp with some direct boxes of course.

but inorder to send each channel on the 1202 to each channel on the 1604 is where im stumped. if the 1202 had separate outs for each channel so i could send them to the 1604 would be great but it doesnt. what do you suggest.

everything from the 1604 will go to the DAW and like you said if i have the other mixer, then there will be a consatnt flow which was a good idea but now i need to figure this out.
