I don't have any 'tricks', I just stick a ribbon mis about 3-4 feet in front of the speaker.
I like Coles 4038's and sometimes a Beyer 160 works too.
I usually use either Telefunken or Neve pres/EQs.
The only 'trick' I know of is to use your instinct.

Hi there Gamo....

Mike is on the money...... For me its nearly allways a 57 into a Neve 1073 and another mic depending on what tone i am chasing. Some of my faves are AKG c12a, 414eb (both bright mics) Neumann U77(yes u77 like solid state 67) U 67 and a 47 F.E.T, Beyer 160 or a coles 4038.

Remember use your ears and not your eyes and not what you read in mix mag. When it moves ya heart thats the stuff that makes legends!

Check the thread a little farther down about recording a 4x10" combo. I like putting a mic in front of the amp, maybe 2" to 8" away with another mic behind it. Getting a whole bunch of mics together and blending them is another cool thing to do.

Wiggy, tell me more about the U77. I've never heard of that. I thought the U87 was the solid state U67.

Neither have I?
... 57 in close then 414 at 6 to 8 feet.
I imagine the 414 up close will be pretty gnarly... I must try this next time.
