yeah, it's silly to just turn to one compressor for all your compression needs. Some compressors add a ton of color to your sound (I like PSP VintageWarmer for that, but some of the BombFactory ones are supposed to be great). Others don't color at all and just do regular old compression, like the Waves C1, which I find is a great tool to have.
Sonalksis makes a nice multiband if you need that kind of thing

They any good?
The Sonitus stuff is cool. Scalez is right; use many different spices for different flavors. I imagine you more than just mustard in your kitchen.
I'm assuming your using Sonar 3 or 4 and have VST capability. If you haven't done yourself the favor of getting over to [[url=http://[/URL]="link removed Audio[/]="link removed Audio[/] to get a handle on plugins, do so at your first available opportunity.
As far as compressors are concerned I like Sonitus, Kjaerhaus Classic (Gold line has some nice things), SLimSLowSLider and digitalfishphones; all of which can be had free of charge and work well with Sonar. If you want to spend some cash I hear great things about Sonalksis (as stated earlier), Kjearhaus Gold Line, Voxengo Crunchessor, db AudioWare and the UAD-1 stuff.

i had Sonar and would not recommend using any bundled processing... i think they all fell flat...
if you can find WAVES Diamond... GET IT!
if you can buy UAD... GET IT!
my favorites have been, Waves C4 or Renisance (not sure if i spelled that right), LA2, 1176s
I write dance music...
BUT, the Pultec EQs from UAD make a great sound...
also, look for a good limiter as well... my all time fav was WAVES L2 but i recently purchased UAD Precision Limiter which i like a lot and it seems to sound "rounder"...

for me the plug-in compressor with the most character is the floorfish from digitalfishphones. but then again it really depends on the individuell material and the what to use it for situation, every (nearly, except the rubish!) compressor has it's place IMO (that counts for nearly all other gear as well, mics and so on....)
