Jam is capable of producing a redbook CD, the question is whether your burner is. As far as media, that is burner dependent also.

Thanks for the reply. I have a couple of external Lacie drives - one is a pure CD-R drive, and the other is a CD-R/DVD-R drive. Is there a way to check the ability of my drives to burn to the redbook standard?

Actually, I think I may have solved that question. The Redbook standard is the same as the CD-DA format, right? So, if my drive states that it will burn CD-DA discs, then we're in business, no?

Should be good, just check that it's capable of burning disc at once in the specs. You can also get media recommendations from the manufacturer. Lacie just bundles the drive, they don't make it. If you look in system profiler, it'll tell you the manufacturer of the drive.

Thanks for your help. The drive is an NEC ND-2510A. The drive definitely supports Disc-At-Once. It can definitely read CD-DA (not that that's surprising...), but I can't find CD-DA explicitly listed under burn modes supported. Rather, it explicitly supports CD-R and CD-RW. NEC's website offers basically no info on the drive. I've found some third-party websites with huge quantities of data about the drive, but nothing about it's redbook compatibility. Do you know of a way I can check this definitiely?

If it can write DAO and it's in good shape, you should be able to write a redbook. In terminal type without the quotes "drutil info" and it will list what the drive is capable of writing.

Thanks for the Terminal tip. 8) When I use that command, my drives (both CD-R and a SuperDrive), show the following:

Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw

I suspect that TAO is track-at-once, but is SAO side-at-once? If so, is SAO the same as DAO (disc-at-once)? If not, what should this line contain to indicate DAO?

SAO (session-at-once) is the same as DAO execpt it gives you the opportunity to leave the session open to write an enhanced cd. Or you can close it and you have a DAO.

We've been having really good results with Maxell "Pro" Music or Data CD-R Media... which is actually Taiyo Yuden with the Maxell brand.

Best not to use the "off brand spindle of 100 for 5 bucks" junk for masters.
