Hi. I just bought a new Canon EOS 5DIII and am setting it up for video. I want to do some short nature/wildlife video clips and capture the ambient sound as best possible.
My two choices would be to use either a Sony PCM-D1 and use it's internal mic, or a Marantz PMD661 with a Audio-Technica BP4025 External Mic. For headphones it would be either the Sony MDR-7520 or Sennheiser HD 25-1 II.
Any comments on the Sony/Marantz-AudioTechnica comparison?

There's something about the AKG C1000 mic that "ambient recordists" like and swear by, even though it sucks on most things musical. It's probably the HF peak in its' response that works well for chirping frogs and croaking birds, but makes cymbals sound like trashcan lids. Don't let the higher price dismay you, shop around for used ones. Music enthusiasts tend to dump them cheap (as do some dealers) when they discover what they'll do to a lovely Martin.

"ambient" recording are generally done via external mic's and also many times are highly directional so that one can sort of sweep around or focus down on something that is easily spooked/distant. For that reason I would go with the Marantz but I'm not sure about that AT mic.
