I've seen P5s for anywhere from $1200 on up. Sometimes WAY up. Most of the time, too UP for me to be interested. For an exquisite specimen, I could see a Prophet otaku spending $2000 - $2500.

The one I have, I bought ridiculously dirt cheap a few years ago and am about the fifth or sixth owner. I've restored all the inner workings myself since I used to be an SCI factory-authorized tech many aeons ago in the early 1980's and still have a set of the factory service manuals, had a few spare parts for it and know the insides of these units intimately.

I recently ran into the guy who was the first original owner of this particular unit all those years ago, and he was expressing interest in trying to buy it back from me for sentimental value. It was his "baby" back in his glory days of playing in a touring band, and I had no idea what they're worth nowadays.

I'd kinda like to hang onto it myself, since I've always loved the big sounds they make, and the fact that these are among the founding original pioneers of computerized synths, but if this guy keeps crying about it I might have to sell it to him since he certainly can play it a million times better than I can and I hate to see an instrument sit idle and not get played much.... but then I also know that it's a fully functional piece of history too, and if it gets played a whole lot, it can risk blowing some irreplaceable IC chips.

Well, if you got it for a song and you're feeling like an "old softy", sell it to the guy for the "bro price" (around $1000 - $1200) rather than the "collector/otaku/anorak" price (double the above). Good karma and all that.

The P5 _IS_ a hip instrument. One of my buddies was absolutely drooling about getting one a couple months ago. We checked out the Native Instruments Pro-52 (I think) softsynth version of the Prophet. Not bad. Not bad at all. Not _exactly_ the same but totally usable. Time to bust out those Talking Heads licks!

That's cool you were at Sequential. You must've known Dave Smith and all those cats. Did you know Charlie Feilding too?

I wasn't at Sequential, I only ran an electronics repair shop at a music store here in Texas that was a Sequential dealership and was the local service center for warranty work, upgrades and general repairs. I was fortunate enough to get to speak with Dave on the telephone a couple of times those many years ago, but never been privileged enough to meet him in person. If I ever did, I'd probably do one of those Wayne's World "I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy, I'm scum, I suck" acts :D
