hey, i am thinking of using a 1ghz amd duron based computer to set up a DAW. this is the basic system: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2014867783 . are there any conflicts inherent in this idea? what would be the best way to go from here, i need suggestions for a good sound card (inputs?) and also for software that will work good on the amd (20 tracks or so). thanks,
stephen

If you were the winner at 142 bucks for that auction, you have a decent web surfing, word processing computer for cheap. Not for DAW.

I built a kids machine with an ASUS board using that chipset(Sis730) and it is slooow.

EDIT: Athlons are about the same price as Durons so if you are building an AMD system, go Athlon. We've been building P4 machines with new Northwood CPU's with great bang for the buck! Read on! ;)

Pretty much what Tommy said...not a DAW machine..plus that system doesnt have Memory, Optical drives or Hard drives...you got a bargain that's for sure...
that board wont do much for you on audio as their will probably be a chipset conflict..I played around with the Sis645 with no luck and Son of Smawg tried out the Sis735 with no luck as well!
Should have come here before you bought that!

What Tommy is referring to is that
One: If you were to go with such system as AMD goes you should get an Athalon vs Duron as the Athalon's are much faster...
Two: You should not use that mainboard(or more to the point..you should not use that chipset!)
Three: That system will not work well with audio...plain and simple..save yourself the headache and sell it and get a reccomended chipset/mainboard combo
Asus AM7266, Gigabyte or Abit are reccomended boards..cant remember the model names of the Gigabyte and the Abit boards at the moment
