Hi guys,
I thought it would be fun to write down a list of misconceptions that at time we heard or were victI'm of.
List :
- Compression is not a volume control : use your slider and/or automate volume changes.
- Very bright does not equal quality, it only introduce harshness
- If the connector fit, you'll be ok : other than inpedance miss match, you can blow up stuff!
- There is no such thing as fix it at mix time. You can't mix what's not there.
- Plugins will put that "magic" into your lackluster recordings.
- Autotune will fix pitch problems and sound natural.
- 7. All condenser mics are fitted with an XLR plug, so you can use an XLR-TRS cable.
- The way to take a signal from a headphone jack is to use a TRS cable feeding a balanced input of your interface.
- The on/off switch fitted on some condenser mics works by switching the phantom power on and off.
- Long reverbs and more bass in the headphones help to sing on pitch
- Mic input on onboard soundcard are good for recording
- 16bit sound cards are good for multi-tracking
- MP3 sound as good as wave files
- All you need is one more piece of equipment.
If you buy (insert gizmo of the month name here), you can sound just like (insert favorite endorsing artist, who got theirs for free here). - To make great recordings, you only need a good mic.
- "Why do I need to book 5 hours? My song is only three minutes long. Why would my three minute song take any longer than 3 minutes to record and mix? I see them do it all the time in VH1 videos."
- "It's gonna cost me $80 per hour to record in the studio? That includes tape and all the musicians too, right?"
- " When I recorded at my friend's house, there was a little blue knob on his recording mixer thingy that made my voice sound better with echo and stuff. I don't see that little blue knob anywhere on your mixer thing."
- " My brother says to make sure you add enough EQ so that my voice will be in true stereo."
- " What did you do to mess up my voice so bad? I sound a lot better than that when I sing at karaoke night down at the bar. My friends tell me I should be a professional!"
- " I can't record here unless you have an aural exciter. You can't consider yourself to be a pro studio without at least one of those."
- Why doesnt this midi controller make any sound?
- why does my mic only come through one speaker?
- mono is old. Everything is recorded in stereo now.
- How come you can't remove the vocal on that song ? isn't it how karaoke is done ?
- I'll go to a better studio, the will make me sound like Celine Dion !
- "The guitar player told me to tell you to boost 5Khz by about 6 db.
What? Why yes, he does use a 100-watt [Marshall] stack cranked up." - The mixing shouldn't take long, just put up the last customer's preset !
- The Nyquist-Shannon Sampling Theorem doesn't apply to audio.
- Room acoustics don't matter as much as high-endconverters/clocks/cables.
Comment if you have questions or if you think it's not a misconception.

Everything is important ! But, you can get away with some level of room defects if you close mic.
I guess it depends on what you are recording. ;)
