My first guess would be, they actually recorded those vocals. My next guess would be "voc align" in ProTools. Put the two together and that's what you've got. Get it?

what remy said. or a mix of both single vox mixed with gang vox.with single vox more up front and gang vox put farther back in the mix with a wee bit of reverb or until desired.

A couple guys around a mic, a bunch of takes (a 'la (where does that apostrophe go?) Bohemian Rhapsody) with some hall reverb on them...

Not really an effect (well, ok, the verb is), just multiple takes, panned out left, center and right.

ya i now its not really an effect, i was talking about the technique really, like mic position, singers, and such....

i didnt know if it was any different than regular gang vocals. sounds a bit different (maybe just the mix) than the usual..

I get the 1, 2, many-feeling.
In theory. I can separate 1 and 2 voices, add one more and you can just say many. The brain is no longer able to distinguish the voices. So i bet on the "bunch of takes" theory, and suited verb.

Just remember when you're doing your own backup vocals, on every separate pass, change the speed at which you are playing and/or recordings. One time a little bit up. Another time a little down. On the next pass, a different microphone or distance from it, etc.. That's the only way to become a crowd by yourself.

I'm feeling crowded in my brassiere. I guess I'll take it off.
