The HD 24 will format any 3 1/2 Inch Drive you stick into it. It utilizes a proprietary disk file format they referred to as "FST". It negates the need to defragment the hard drive. You'll need the matching FireWire hard drive adapter and software if you hope to complete your projects in your computer and a large enough hard disk drive in your computer to accommodate the transfer from the HD 24 Hard Drive. Otherwise, you just use it with an analog console and mix in analog. It's a lovely machine and works quite nicely just be careful of the 1/4" jacks on the back as they're really difficult to replace if damaged.

It has to be IDE (not SATA). Go for a drive with a rotational speed of 7200rpm or higher. The HD24 will format drives up to several TB.

The drive bolts into a caddy that then slots into the HD24. To use the FireWire adaptor, you take the caddy out of the HD24 and plug the FW interface on to the back of it, so you don't tie up the HD24 while doing transfers to the computer. You can buy extra caddies (they're made by ViPower) so you can have several drives that you rotate as you process the contents.

The HD24 is a single-purpose machine that is very good at what it does.

I would advise you to get a cheap UPS to run the HD24 from. You only need enough UPS capacity for about a minute. If you are recording live in a venue and the power trips out near the end of the evening, it's near impossible to retrieve any of the recorded information from the HD24 unless it's shut down gracefully in a way that writes the index back on to the drive.

So,did you guys mean that when slot in the Drive with the caddy into the HD24,and it'll automatically Format the H.Drive to the format which is suit the HD24?? Or i do need to press any Button to do the Formating function??

So,besides the H.Drive must be IDE,the speed is the performance of Recording?? so,you both Recommended 7200rpm and above?? how about just 7200rpm,is it Good enough??

The 7200 rpm disk drives are totally adequate for 24 trackwork. It's best if you purchase drives that have at least an 8MB cache, not 2MB.

The recorder is a purpose built machine and so there are no improvements when utilizing drives with higher rotational speeds.

Hi,So..any recommended Brand of H.Disk for HD24??i think 80GB s'ld be fit my once recording.

No particular recommendations as it's an undemanding use for the drive, at least in the sense that there is no heavy head shuttling going on. Go to your local computer store and get a drive or two before they all have SATA interfaces.
