I can't get a loud sound recording, i've tried 3 different mics each on Goldwave, Adobe Audidtion and windows sound recorded and all of them record really quitely, even when I shout into the mic! This means I have to edit the volume of the file which makes it distort. I've put the mic volume on full in Volume control (i'm using windows XP btw) but still it hardly responds.
plz help

(corrected EX to XP) ^^

Not at all a silly question. Indeed, the number one reason for such problems is wrong plug in wrong place. Come to think of it, wrong plug/ wrong place has gotten me into trouble many times!!!

A "normal" dynamic mic should work fine(Or as well as it can work) in most any soundcard, if plugged into the mic input(Using a stupid 1/8" adapter, which along with the heavy mic cable tries to break the back out of your cheap sound card....) no preamp needed. A condenser mic(If not an electret condenser with it's own battery) always needs a preamp.

On the other hand, get a mic pre... Save your sound card's mini jacks...

While you're at it, get a sound card/audio interface built for the purpose! The one's that come with the computer are for plugging in the 6 dollar mics to talk to Aunt Millie with your new Vonage hookup...
