Me and my friend are trying to get a basic home studio thrown together. however due to the fact of both of us being fairly new to recording tequnique, equipment, software etc, we need a bit of help. i need advise on a mic. we play any genre type from death metal to rock and punk and need a vocal studio mic to get a real good, clean, clear sound. we're looking to spend up to about $130, i know that doesn't leave to many options, but that's about the limit of our budget. condensor? dynamic? help. thanks

SM58. Cheap condensers sound cheap. Granted, I do like using the cheap condenser I bought for lead guitar, but it sounds horrid on vocals. The Sennheiser e906 is a great mic for guitars: you get the e609, and you have two additional filtering options. The e609 is still a good mic, though, and you can tape it right on your grill. When it comes to tubes, anything under at least $600 is gonna be less than stellar (think about it in terms of guitar amps: how much do you have to spend to get a good tube amp?). God bless.

You can get a fine condenser for $130. I picked up a Shure KSM27 for $100 and it works splendidly.

The SM58 is going to be your best bet, though, as NCdan said. Especially since you're going to record different styles with different singers (I think?). The 58 is safe all-around whereas different condensers flatter different voices.

If there's just one singer and a condenser gives you the sound you want, get it. Otherwise, the 58 is probably going to give you that sound anyways.

it is just one guy, for now anyways. he does a range of screaming to clean singing vocals. last summer we recorded with a guy who had a good (i think MXL but i'm not sure) studio condenser so that's really why we decided to try and go that way, we really liked the sound we got out of it.
