I love them. It is pretty much all I use other than the P2A. The SF12 runs just fine with either.

When I tried the solo pre quite a while back I was underwhelmed. I've since started to get the coolness of clean pre's. A couple of engineers I really respect love these. I could see these being very cool for the right application.

In the FWIW category, their 500 rack pre is a colored pre.

In the work I do, it is the room and the mic selection which are the color. And of course a performer that works on interpersonal sound as part of daily practice.

Heck yes! These are really nice. Clean, clear, and robust all at once. Massive soundfield and the feeling that the tracks are a bit bigger than in real life. When they first came out, there was this underwhelming response by supposedly 'golden eared' folks who just didint really 'get' the true to life aura of this line. Seems to have been resolved since then.....probably by usage. I used to have a P2........dont ask. One reason I try not to sell ANYTHING any longer.

BTW,,,, The Mid/side monitoring on the P2 is pretty darned awesome if you use that setup.

Whats the difference between the 8 and 8i? There is a few hundred difference in price but I can't seem to find why. Is it a DI?

I stands for international version so I think it has to do with the power supply.

I now no longer use Millennias in favor of the True Systems. The Millennias, in comparison, sound distant and "glassy." The Trues are big and open. They're not warm, they're not bright, they're just there and very good at doing so. I've had a handful of the "best" "transparent" pres and really haven't found anything that beats the True in regards to sound, value, size, build quality, features, etc.

8 channels in a single rack with dual outputs and a predictable, but delicious sound... I've had Millennias, Grace, DAV, and even some that would get me respected over at GearSlutz (which I consider to be an insult, not a compliment...), but the Trues are what wind up in my rack.

Another FWIW - I'm shopping for a lunchbox setup right now and am considering a quartet of "colored" or "big" sounding pres. I wasn't aware until now that the True 500 series were not transparent. I was considering either the Vintech or the Daking (or 2 of each). I'd use them and a couple solid state recorders to capture small chamber gigs, audition tapes, etc. The idea of 2 small recorders, a lunchbox, 3 small stands and a few mics is REALLY appealing! The idea of a single DSD recorder, an SF12 and a lunchbox of sweetass pres is even more appealing!

Now, I just have to come up with some cash... Anyone need an extra kidney?

It is the power supply. The 8 has a single voltage standard internal power supply while the 8i has a multi-voltage separate power supply. The specs are identical.
