If you were to go through direct box's they would be plugged into mic pre's. You could also simply run the Tritons line outs to line inputs on your converters or recorders inputs but you may not be able to get enough gain. If that is the case you can use the Direct box approach...

I often run keys in to mic pres to obtain a certain type of tone either via the DI or the balanced line input on those that have them.

DI's of course. They're good for line level impedence. And like Gaff & Kurt said, if color/tone is what your after, then add that pre into the chain.

A lot will depend on the specific sound itself. I've had quite a bit of luck running keyboard sounds (organs, electric pianos, clavinets, etc.) through a speaker and micing it. Strings I just DI dry right to tape/disk. Horns seem to need a pre of some kind.
