First of all I want to say Hi as your Computing moderator and welcome you all to this wonderful place to share and discuss the world of DAW recording.
I would like to start this off by having people post their optimixation techniques for their systems...Obviously there are little more tips for PC than Mac due to the nature of the OS differences and so forth..
I myself am a heavy PC user due to the nature of the beast and the challenge it offers..call me nuts but that's me...a bag of mixed nuts! So with that said let the posts roll in! Hope to hear from you all soon!

same can be said for PC -- the less crap mucking up your system, the better. I generally limit my DAW to the audio stuff, basic email/web apps, and a few minor MS Office apps as well. For Windows users, I also turn off any 'Sounds' in the Control Panel. Also, from my experience, AVOID installing Norton Utilities on your DAW. It's gonna f*ck you up down the line.
I've also kept the low budget soundcard that came with the PC in the computer (a fairly good sounding Yamaha model). Most software doesn't even recognize the pro audio card I installed (MP3 encoder, etc.), and so it works fine with the other.

Drew, I think you have too much stuff in there as soon as you said "a few minor Microsoft office apps". I would recommend keeping MS office out of the DAW. It has a tendency to do little background tasks that hinder DAW performance. I don't even connect the DAW to the internet as a matter of fact. I have another PC for this and they are connected on a LAN so I can install updates etc. I have noticed that nothing frags up a hard drive quicker than a little internet surfing. I have been using the Win98SE setup tweaks which RME suggests. They can be found at http://www.rme-audio.com in the Tech Pages. It's a pretty good compilation of all the accepted Windows tweaks.

For Pro Tools on a Mac, use one drive for your OS and apps, and another for audio only. Create a new Extension Set that is the Mac Base extensions plus any extensions needed for PT, and that's it. The more stuff you add, the more you are inviting errors .
