I write my own drum beats and save them as MIDI files. What's the best way to get them sounding real and awesome (without using a real drum kit)?
I use SONAR X1 Studio on a Windows 7 32-bit O/S.
Do I need to be using something like BFD2 or Superior Drummer 2?
Any advice on this matter is welcomed. Thanks

You're absolutely correct. You would need to look at other sample libraries. I use Superior Drummer 2 and couldn't be happier. It allows you to control almost everything - even the bleed. EZ Drummer isn't too bad either. However, the drum sounds are more processed. Both products can be expanded with additional libraries.
For what you're wanting, either would suffice. Before, you decide on what to get, you may wish to consider the difference in price between them and also BFD2, and their features. Research them thoroughly and buy once wisely instead of wishing you'd gone for another.

ime the most important thing to making programmed drums sound "real" is to make sure the part is something that a human drummer both could and would play.
