What mic? How are you recording? Need more info. Any mic with proper balanced cabling should not have problems with RF UNLESS the cable or mic is faulty.

Yes, tell us more about your microphone, the cable you are using (including makes of connectors if you know them), and what you are plugging it into.

im having the same problem now that i've started recording in my new apartment. i'm using a few different mics, all shure mics except for one, i have a sen 421 too. I'm using sure cables that came with the mics, and one is a Neutrik, it says its shield balanced. i'm running all these into a presonus fp10.

Like any good detective, you're going to have to start tracking this down, one piece of gear at a time.

First of all, does ANYTHING work cleanly, with no RF? Can you, for example, play a CD or WAV file through your system, and out to the headphones or monitors without RF? If so, you're starting OK there.... If not, unplug/physically disconnect everything but the playback system & phones/speakers, and work on that. You want to make sure your "mothership" is clean first and build from there.

Then move to the pre's, mics & cables, one at a time. Does one mic work particularly bad, or is it everything, all the time? If you find you can get at least one mic (& cable combination) working ok, then you're starting to sort out which one is the problem.

Eventually, you may find it's one particular cable that doesn't work well with one particular mic, and so on. With properly sheilded cables, mics & pre's, you should be able to work almost anywhere, except perhaps underneath a radio transmission tower.

I have a friend who dropped a ton of $$ on a perfect-condition restored RCA 44 ribbon mic, thinking it would be his "holy grail" for recording his voice. He sings very quietly, and likes to work at least 1-2 feet from the mic. The self noise is bad enough, but the AC hum he's picking up in the background drove him crazy. We tried it in a lot of other places to confirm it wasn't the mic per se, and the ONLY place it picks up hum is in HIS HOME. After a LOT of investigation (and literally turning off everything in his home from the breakers), it turns out the AC service for his house (a cottage) and the master house (his landlord) runs right up and through the main side wall; usage meters, breaker panels, EVERYTHING comes in from the main service pole and is radiating into his house, and there's nothing that can be done (Short of moving the AC panel to another place on the property). Everything else is working fine, but ribbons are a no-go where he lives. Bummer! Don't feel TOO bad for him, because he's also got a great-condition Neumann U87 that works perfectly fine for him anyway. ;-)
